# Setup

> Learn what you can do in Setup, the app for configuring a Wandelbots NOVA OS instance and its robot cells. Discover guided robot connection, reusable configurations, and installation management.

Setup is the app where you configure a Wandelbots NOVA OS instance and the robot cells running on it.
It's the first app you'll open: add a robot in Setup, and you can work with it in the Robot Pad.

> **Info:** This page describes the current Setup. Some installations still show the previous version, with fewer of the capabilities described here, and a banner on the home screen pointing this out.
> See the [FAQ](/nova/26.8/faq#setup-still-displays-a-previous-version-after-updating) to confirm which version your installation is on and how to update.

## Use a virtual controller

Wandelbots NOVA provides you with virtual controllers for ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Stäubli, Techman, UR, and Yaskawa robots, for path planning, app development and simulation purposes.

You can start the virtual controller setup in Setup on your NOVA instance.
The setup instructions will guide you through the process of:

1. Selecting your robot type.
2. Choosing the manufacturer and model.
3. Configuring TCPs.

## Connect a physical robot

You can also connect your ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Stäubli, Techman, UR or Yaskawa robots to Wandelbots NOVA.
This allows you to run your applications on real robots and test them in a real-world environment.

Be sure to check out the [safety requirements](/nova/26.8/safety/overview) and [cell designs](/nova/26.8/setup/cell-design) before you start setting up your robot.

The setup instructions are tailored to the supported brands but all respect the following structure:

1. Supported models of the brand,
2. Preparing the robot for the connection with Wandelbots NOVA including controller requirements,
3. Physically connecting the IPC to the robot controller,
4. Connecting your controller in Setup on your NOVA instance: Wandelbots NOVA detects the IPC's network address automatically,
5. Troubleshooting common issues that may arise during the setup process, including configuring the IPC's network settings manually if your installation doesn't support automatic assignment yet.

## Reuse configurations across cells and instances

Export a cell's configuration, or a single virtual robot's configuration, to a file.
Import it into another cell or instance instead of recreating the setup from scratch.

## Manage your installation in one place

Setup's `System` area covers the NOVA OS instance itself: its version and available updates, diagnosis packages for support, and health warnings about the installation.

## Map signals and connect protocols

Map I/O signals from your robot controller and connected devices, and set up a PROFINET connection, alongside your robot configuration.
